The third round of the 2024 American Express concludes Sunday at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. You can find full American Express tee times for Sunday’s final round at the bottom of this post.

This week started with Sam Burns displaying how he paid up on a lost college football bet with his pal Justin Thomas. And wouldn’t you know it, the two are paired together in the final round of the American Express, however, they won’t be the center of attention.

‘Can you spell N-I-L?’: Amateur on brink of unthinkable PGA Tour win

That’s because the final threesome will feature not only two of the PGA Tour’s best players but also a college sophomore. And in a shocking twist, the 20-year-old is currently besting the duo with a combined 20 PGA Tour titles, as well as the rest of the 156-player field.

Nick Dunlap is on the cusp of doing the unthinkable Sunday after a Saturday 60, tied for the lowest round by an amateur on the PGA Tour, gave him a three-shot lead over Burns at 27 under. If he’s able to hold off Burns, Thomas — who is four back at 23 under — and any other contenders, he’d be the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991. Only one other player, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, is better than 20 under.

Dunlap, the reining U.S. Amateur champion who is in the middle of his second season at Alabama, appears up for the challenge, but there’s no telling what his nerves will be like as he plays on a Sunday with the lead for the first time in his PGA Tour career.

The final pairing of Dunlap, Burns and Thomas will tee off at 2:02 p.m. ET of the first tee of PGA West’s Dye Stadium course, where all play will be Sunday.
